RGS Climbing Trip

We have just returned from a fantastic weekend Climbing trip with students from RGS Newcastle. We travelled down to the Yorkshire Dales to experience the delights of Limestone climbing. The group stayed at Ingleton Youth Hostel for two nights. The general feedback on the accommodation was really positive. Great food and a warm welcome.

It was however the climbing that the 'Team' were really interested in. The 9 students have a lot of indoor experience thanks to the excellent climbing programme that Mr Dunn has developed for the school. They are technically very good. Over the last year we have worked with the school on day visits to crags in Northumberland and North Yorkshire. It was great to get away for two days to build on this foundation.

Hutton Roof on Saturday in hot sun was a challenging start. 10 routes were rigged for climbing. Many others were soloed by the group and some were used to practice placing gear. They progressed from bottom roping to top roping.

Twistleton Scar on Sunday again proved to be a warm and sunny venue. Top roping was the plan. The students were superb. They were confidently moving around the top of the crag on the limestone pavement, tying into anchors in and out of reach and belaying teams up routes from HS 4b to E3 5c!

Mr Dunn has a brilliant climbing programme in place. The students are very lucky to have such fantastic opportunities. They are brilliant young climbers and clearly are responding enthusiastically to what is on offer. I am sure we will see many of these students on Learn to Lead courses in the next two years.

Great weekend. Thank you!
