Dame Allan's Y9 Expedition

Dame Allan's School from Newcastle run an excellent Y9 expedition as an introduction to the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

We met c.50 students near Slaggyford in the South Tyne valley on Saturday morning., and with a lot of very enthusiastic staff support walked groups of 5/6 students down the Pennine Way / South Tyne Trail via Haltwhistle to Herdings Hill campsite. Our remit was to teach NAVIGATION!

Our groups were brilliant. We had an excellent day. On reaching the campsite our role switched to teaching camp craft.....putting up a range of tents and cooking on  Gaz and Meths. The students were superb. They had an eclectic mix of food and became better organised, by necessity, as the rain arrived.

Sunday proved to be a challenging day. Groups were up early, cooking breakfast. Then the rain arrived! Tents were packed wet and groups left the site in sombre mood. It was great to see all the Teams at Check-point 1 in high spirits as the realization that they COULD navigate alone, and that the sun was about to make an appearance.

On a day with very mixed weather, all groups made their way successfully to Housesteads thanks to the help and encouragement of DAS staff and ATNE support.

This is a brilliant experience for the Y9's of Dame Allan's. We look forward to supporting them on their Qualifying Expedition in May.

Well done Teams!
