I traveled across to the Lake District early on Thursday morning due to a very promising forecast and the chance to get in a mountain day before meeting Dame Allans School for a DofE training expedition later in the day.
My efforts were certainly rewarded with a stunning day out on Skiddaw (931m) in amazing 'alpine' conditions. Skiddaw can be a bit of a slog, but with such spectacular scenery for once it was a magical place. By 500m we had total snow cover, and beyond Jenkin Hill it was full-on winter conditions. The sun, blue skies and great visibility had tempted a number of walkers onto the mountain. It was noticeable that a significant number turned back at Broad End as the wind speed increased significantly along the summit ridge. Poor Meg got blown-over a number of times as we headed for the Cairn.
It was a fantastic day out in superb winter conditions. Very cold, very windy but very satisfying.
