Ponoch Via Ferrata, Costa Blanca

With a day off on the Costa Blanca, and sun with blue skies guaranteed, the chance to re-visit the superb Grade 3+ Via Ferrata on the imposing  south face of Ponoch was too hard to resist. Driving up through the Urbanisation is quite serreal, but eventually I reached the parking and Heli pad site.

A strenuous 20 mins uphill trek through ancient terraces, woodland and marquis eventually brings you to the  start of the VF. It is immediately steep and imposing, the staples taking an improbable overhanging line for 30+m. This is hard work! The route follows a broad arete. The occasional traverses right and left seem to emphasize the exposure as height is gained.Easier sections are short-lived, an the whole route feels steep and uncompromising. The reward s however are great. The VF finishes high on the El Ponoch with magnificent views all around.
A short descent down a narrow track leads to the first Abseil station. A 25m abseil lands you on a small ledge. Ropes are pulled through, and a second 35m abseil gets you to the bottom of the crag. 20 mins down a steep track through the woods and you are safely back at the car.
Hard work, exciting, great fun!
